This is the headline of an article in the FT which argues the opposite of what I argued recently - that no self respecting politician would willingly destroy jobs from his own voters. It ties into what @Peteski recently wrote as well.
full article is here: https://www.ft.com/content/61684fa6-d2f ... 74db66bcd5 which is behind a pay wall. One quote below:
"The threats facing the German car industry could be existential, according to Herbert Diess, chief executive of Volkswagen. He told German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung that politicians were spending too much effort legislating the automotive industry and creating unreasonable emissions standards, while turning a blind eye to the possibility that it could result in 100,000 job losses at VW".
Can Germany survive the ‘iPhone moment’ for cars?
The VW Chief needs to consider the bigger picture. Of course nobody wants them to lose 100,000 jobs, but neither does anyone want their health affected by air pollution or climate change.
Then people should stop consuming needless crap that contributes way more to their health problems, both mental and physical.
A generation of unemployment and 3 generations of resentment can be pretty bad too.

Yes they should, but that doesn't in any way make it okay for a large automotive company to hold its government ransom over future emissions standards, especially with their recent track record! Sometimes politics can actually be beneficial for society, even if we like to hate politicians in general. It kind of goes hand in hand with a democratic society.
