I must admit, I've been tempted by those a few times and seems they're getting cheaper by the day!
A BMW dealer I know said that a significant proportion of i8s bounce back from owners in the first 3 months of ownership and they are very difficult to shift. He wouldn't clarify the reasons why.

But the thing I really can't get over with BMWs is their stubborn insistence on fitting a 90's dashboard with radio preset buttons. I drove a new 3 series last year and it was hard to tell the dash apart from the last one I had in 2002. Then there's the awful iDrive to contend with.

So it's a no from me ;)
I thought iDrive had improved a lot - I had a go in the M2 before my missus insisted we needed more space :( . But, if the kiddies get to experience 0-60 in 4s on the school run, can't be that bad!
4 seconds is glacial by today's standards - they won't be impressed

My BMW whinge is the actual pain in arse I get from driving them for more than a couple of hours.
The hard sports seats + M Sport Suspension + Runflats tyres are just too much for my delicate derrière

I looked at an X4 but no smaller and the coupe design/ lower stance made the back seat entry very awkward due to the position of the door in relation to seat.
This reminds me I saw a new X5 parked right next to a Macan the other day and I was shocked at the size difference. The X3 must sit somewhere in the middle I guess.
I was sat behind an X5 yesterday - it looked immense! It’s a strange feeling being in a reasonably sized SUV and being totally dwarfed by another!

It's a pretty exotic chassis for that money. Quirky interior though, it didn't strike me as being very practical as a daily drive. Only sat in one though, never driven one.

I drove one, but only ~3 miles... fantastic ride, although a little confusing... electric + 3-cyl petrol engine that sounds like V8 (digital fake but realistic sound)

Used prices seem to support that. It can't be easy marketing a car like this against more conventional multi-cylinder supercars. The things that really set it apart from many of its rivals (like the composite chassis) are invisible to all but the keenest of buyers. Personally I like the concept, but would much prefer it to be a full on EV like the Taycan. At the end of the day, while the drivetrain performance is still pretty strong, it's not exactly amazing for its class.

....but at 65k for a pre-reg or 30-40k for a used example starts to look quite appealing

With the lack of full support in the rural UK for the charging of pure Ev's, I prefer the approach of the I8. Unfortunately, I struggle to get in or more particularly out of one. And unfortunately BMW has dropped the range extender option from the I3, the car I can get in and out of!!
