The car industry is certainly going through some serious transformation at the moment. Bad news for those that rely on it for a living.

I maintain that irrespective of shifts in demand, a company will always take the path of least resistance where an added complexity is thrown into the mix - namely Brexit. Why re-engineer supply chains and deal with all the necessary hassle when you can simply centralise your production elsewhere??! This isn't a political forum, nor should it be, but Brexit will kill off car manufacturing in the UK. Biggest own goal in a generation. That's me done.

Global sales being given as the reason for this, according to current news bulletins? Also shutting their plant in Turkey. All production going back to Japan. The EU doing them a free trade deal may have helped helped facilitate this move?

I was at Tewkesbury earlier so not too far away. My SE knows people down in Swindon and the official word to the workforce - not the newsworthy one (!) - is that they're mothballing the plant until they know which way the UK is going.

Not a political forum as per GMAM75 but as a business owner these contingencies are a massive waste of time, money and energy, which can never be recovered, and will knock-on for some years. End. Rant over!

Very sad news for those Swindon workers. Potentially a huge blow for the area.

Sad news indeed for my home town. I know a lot of people who work at Honda. The headlines say that 3,500 jobs are at risk, but the reality is more like 10,000 when all the supplying firms and linked services are taken into account. :(

Confirmed closure this morning:-

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47287386

Ian Howells, senior vice-president for Honda in Europe, told the BBC: "We're seeing unprecedented change in the industry on a global scale. We have to move very swiftly to electrification of our vehicles because of demand of our customers and legislation."

"This is not a Brexit-related issue for us, it's being made on the global-related changes I've spoken about.
"We've always seen Brexit as something we'll get through, but these changes globally are something we will have to respond to. We deeply regret the impact it will have on the Swindon community."

I'm not sure I totally believe the Brexit comment as I'm sure it was a factor even if they don't want to admit it.
