Ill-conceived and it remains to be seen whether it makes it through when thoroughly debated.

As the AA commented ‘dodgems are speed limited and still crash’!

And significant that some of the world’s biggest crashes are the multiples in the US caused by all vehicles traveling at the same speed.

But wait... tech stops that now so...

...autonomous caravans it is!

Just give me the pills and take me away 🤯

According to the article I read, the system can be overridden by pressing hard on the accelerator.
All kind of ridiculous and pointless if you ask me. The whole world is a mess and someone decides its the motorist that needs more draconian governing..... Again!

I’m sure Jaguar, Rolls, Bentley, Alpha, Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Maserati, Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini, etc and every motor bike manufacturer might just have something to say.

Perhaps we’ll all be just employing and enjoying ludicrous mode for 2 seconds.

This has been proposed many times before but thankfully hasn't made it into law. But I guess newer technology makes it easier and cheaper to implement now. It's a good stunt for gaining votes.

It still won't stop all those idiots staring at their phones crashing into the vehicle in front, despite the tech being available to do that now.

Absolutely. Driver education is key. I’m sure we’ve all experienced some of the more exotic European driving ‘skills’. Road deaths in France are twice the U.K. level.

The whole scheme smacks of prohibition type logic. People get drunk - ban alcohol. Too simplistic for words.

Overridden maybe, but a bit like trying to drive a modern car without wearing a seat belt there will be a blizzard of beeps and flashes to warn of impending doom, so little choice but slow down and conform. IMHO the end of the sports car as we know it and for that matter most of the European car industry who's selling point is making you believe their cars are more exciting and rewarding to drive than anything else. Best give up, just buy a Chinese automatous box and accept the nanny state has won. Unintended consequences but consequences indeed. Speed is always an easy target of the safety mob for reducing road deaths and injuries, when in reality its inattention and downright carelessness thats to blame for most accidents but then thats a much more difficult one to solve so speed it is then.

It’s basically trying to prepare people for fully autonomous vechicles

Thing is fully autonomous vechicles is a massive con they can’t program the car for every conceive situation possible so it’s fine until it encounters a situation it’s not programmed for

They’d need to introduce an AI based system. Skynet driving your car anyone. You could argue that Tesla with all there gimmicks are actually making drivers mode unsafe becaue it lulls you into a false sense of security. What happens when the car dosent react and the driver thinks that the car will?

Well trained humans are actually the best drivers

EU Road Safety Report 2018

Makes for interesting reading. Note the countries above average - lots of Eastern Europe but also France, Belgium, Italy (surprise!). Note also Luxembourg whose stats fluctuate - cos of its small size!

And Greece. Two & a half times that of the U.K.!!

And the deaths by type. Most on rural lanes and urban and relatively few - just 8% - on motorways.

Also that by far the highest proportion involve pedestrians and two-wheeled vehicles. And that this sector has also seen a lower than average reduction.

I think it begs some interesting questions re how further improvements should be made.

A more acceptable option as far as I'm concerned is to implement an Advanced Driver license that everybody has to pass by 2022 to be allowed to drive on European roads with mandatory retesting every three years. This would have the double effect of increasing the level of driver capability whilst taking poor drivers off the roads thus freeing them up for people who are proficient drivers. I'm sure it would be far more effective in cutting accidents than implementing a simplistic speed control mechanism

I was always rather fond of the Jonathan Swift (Gullivers Travels) solution to the Irish potato famine. Eat children. A twofold resolution simultaneously provides food and reduces the population.
