This would have the double effect of increasing the level of driver capability whilst taking poor drivers off the roads thus freeing them up for people who are proficient drivers. I'm sure it would be far more effective in cutting accidents than implementing a simplistic speed control mechanism
Spot on, but so expensive and difficult to implement the politicians will never go for it. They'll always take the cheap and easy option that makes them appear to be doing something, regardless of how ineffective it might be.

Consistently get the speed limit detection not available warning northbound on the M1 at the the start of "the national forest" anyone else?
Agreed, road sign reading systems will have to be a lot more reliable and in the country, hedges cut more often. There will have to also be alot of relocation of signs. For instance as one drives the A27 west from Lewes and just having dropped past the Amex Stadium, there is a 40mph sign meant to cover the start of Lewes road as it leaves the A27, which the cameras on cars remaining on the Brighton bypass speed limit 70 mph pick up. Near home in a 30 mph zone, there is a badly placed 15mph sign on the entry to a private road, the camera picks up.

Just imagine what is going to happen to the car industry, for several years after implementation. Little new car sales and hence manufacture plus growth in the repair industry.

This is just another interfering EU proposal. A few years ago, France tried to bring one of their laws into EU legislation. Whereas all vehicles, that come out of the showroom, are forbidden to be altered in anyway. Stating that they have Type Approval, and should stay that way. So that would have had a massive impact on the aftermarket car industry. It would have been finished. Thats probably why the cars you see in France are boring, without any character.
The proposal got kicked out, and was never implemented.
When I was in Portugal, while washing my car in the hotel car park. The manager said, that's against the law. Probably due to water conservation, and it can only be done at an approved auto wash site. He then went onto say, there is some wierd laws. Another is, it is illegal to change a bettery on your car at the roadside.
We should be allowed to make our own laws, not from the EU.

I suspect road signs will be irrelevant. The speed will be set by GPS.

BBC are saying road signs and GPS does not work because of roadwork limits and smart motorways.

Prob combination of both then. And no doubt smart motorways will be able to feed into GPS systems.

It would not surprize me at all if it does come into force that all Cities, Towns, Villages etc are ing fenced at 20 mph.

Tha would make control far easier, then 40 mph elsewhere except on Motorways.

As it is the A6 from North of Carnforth to south of Stockport is 40 mph or less.

Also, both cameras and sign technology needs improving....we went through the Almondsbury interchange “smart” motorway during the rush this am; variable limits flashing through 50 and or 60 but Mrs P’s TTS, with camera activated speed limit notification stuck steadfastly to 70.......

(Maybe the same issue as highlighted a few months ago that the car’s camera can’t read the overhead gantry signs?)

The more worrying bit in the article that I read (BBC, so it must be correct) was that cars would also be fitted with black boxes to record what they were doing and if the speed limiter was being over-ridden/turned off. Now that would be a nuisance. As per a previous post, buy the car you want a few months before this comes in.
