Asking for a friend obviously.
Say a chap fancied a change of carriage or a second car but needed to keep the missus and so had a lowly budget for a ten year old or over 911 what to look for and what to avoid? Manual v PDK? 2 v 4 wheel drive etc? I’m thinking reliability is a priority.
Which 911 of about 10 Years Old?

Really good question, I'm sure you'll get a few different views. Anything really old e.g. air -cooled 964,993 is now silly money so you are looking at 996 onwards.Tom 2000 wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2019 11:25 pm Asking for a friend obviously.

My personal shout would be a facelift 997 i.e. gen2 997 C4S with PDK (2009 onwards) - this particular model has the newer PCM so looks considerably more modern than the gen1 and became available from 2009 with the PDK gearbox. Avoid the gen1 tiptronics as the gearbox is slow and dimwitted. If you want more user involvement then of course you could get a 997.2 with manual gearbox. The prices for the 997 C4S appear to have bottomed out so from a residual point of view you are unlikely to take a big hit in say 2 years time.
Also most importantly the Gen2 997 didn't have the problems of the IMS bearings that the earlier models did, so from a reliability point of view definitely Gen2 997.
I like the thought of the 997 as it is probably the last of the compact 911s, the 991 and 992 certainly feel bigger. I've owned 996 and 991 and Cayman models and the 996 (which is very similar in dimensions to 997) feels much closer in size and feel to my Cayman.
Happy hunting.

All those 99x’s mean nothing to me. So you need 2009 onwards to have a modern PDK? That’s useful to know.

Agree with Arif, Gen2 997 from 2009 with PDK box but would go for Carrera S as opposed to C4S. Not exactly a lowly budget buy though, still will command mid £40k for a reasonably low mileage example ten year old car which is expensive to maintain and run. Could get a good spec nearly new Golf GTS or R for that money, or if you really want sportcar fun.. A Lotus Elise 220 Sport, which will burn off any Carrera without burning your wallet in the process

997 is a pretty car, get a .2 or a .1 with the remedial engine work (Hartech are the experts) or a .1 with proper miles and good service history and lots of bills
