Porsche Range Days at Silverstone.

Just received an invitation for a Range Day at the Silverstone PEC.

Maybe some of you folks have or will soon receive one so a word of warning.

My invitation is for a session on the week leading up to the F1 Grand Prix.

I attended such a session two years ago and getting into the circuit took an hour waiting in a long queue of Contractors to get vetted and booked in at Security. I tried ringing the PEC to see if they could intervene as by the time we had been there for a while there were a far number of Porsche cars in the queue, there was no response to the repeated telephone calls made.

If that was not bad enough the acceleration/braking and low friction circuits were out of action as that is the helicopter base for the GP and there were Portacabins and Marquees all over the place.

If you choose to attend either side of the F1 GP you to may experience the above.

As it was the Range Day was fairly enjoyable but I only drove multiple laps in a Macan PP and in a C4GTS, the Caymen and Panamera were only driven to and from the skid pan and ice hill respectively, Cayenne was as a passenger over the off road course, the usual BS human factors was a waste of time that we did not really have due to the late start because of the access hold ups getting through the gate.

So all in all for us it was not really worth the 360 mile round trip and overnight stay to attend the session.

You would normally get a range day invite c 2 years into ownership assuming you bought new as they want you to start thinking about your next Porsche

Was fortunate enough to attend a range day a couple of weeks ago and I’ve only been an owner for a year.

Drove Macan and Panamera on the roads. Drove 2 x 911 on the circuit and launch control area (one the 4WD and one the 2WD). Drove Cayman and Boxster on the ice hill and kick plate section. Was a passenger on the Cayenne circuit.
Have to say it was a brilliant day. Loved the 911 and Panamera. Although remain happy with my Macan GTS.....for now!

Paul, out of curiosity, do you feel that your attendance of the range day will increase the chance of you ordering a new Porsche? Just wondering, as obviously this must be the motivation behind Porsche laying on these expensive events. :geek:

Hi Wing Commander.

I thought about this quite a lot after the event and as a new member of the Porsche family my views may be different to the more established members who may have become a bit comfortable with these type of events.

However, having now attended a track day and a range day, plus had some other customer service dealings with Porsche which were very well handled, whilst not even contemplating a new car now I would , subject to finance and suitability, look first to Porsche.

What I appreciate is that in this day and age of indifferent customer service, so far Porsche have made me feel a very welcome part of an exclusive club.

Having run VW’s, BMWs and Volvo’s amongst others, no one has shown any interest in me after the sale.

So I think Porsche are clever in this regard. It is brilliant PR for them and I enthuse to everyone about how great they are and my car is which is what their investment in me is all about.

So, in conclusion, for me personally, as and when I change my car I’d like to think that it would be for another Porsche. Without the range and experience days the decision may well be the same, but all the other stuff helps!

I enjoyed the Range day I last did and now looking forward to my invite in the next year or two although my mate picked up a new 991.2 RS last year has been invited this year and he has asked me to come along as his +1

I was there yesterday, not for a range day but just the normal track day. Had never been despite getting my invitation over three years ago when I ordered my GTS.

Just wanted a fun day so I requested a 992 which was great. Really good day and should have gone before but it’s not so handy from N Ireland. Our consultant was Ollie who was excellent and easy to chat with and great with my kids aged 14 and 12. Ollie took them and wife for a few fast laps which they really enjoyed.

Best of all I didn’t have to use the left indicator once on my runs in the 992 lol as Ollie always encouraged me to go as quick as possible.

And yes it does kinda make you feel
a bit special to answer Wing Co’s question and likely does make me want to keep in the Porsche club. Loved the 992 but
totally impractical with the kids at this age unless they both could live with double amputations.

Good to hear, MCDK! :)

I am constantly surprised at how practical the 911 is (991.2 in my case). My girlfriend’s son is 15 and nearly 6’ tall. He loves riding in the back of the Carrera T. And he’s often accompanied by his girlfriend or a mate. Some owners push the practicality a bit further by opting for a rooftop storage box and or a bike carrier! :)
