Should I buy a Boxster 718 GTS?

I’m thinking of parting company with my much loved 981 Aqua Blue Boxster S as it is now 6 years old. It’s still in great condition and has only done 26,000 miles.
I had a test drive of the 718 GTS recently and liked it. I actually quite liked the sound of the engine ( there must be something wrong with me!) and the extra performance was nice. I know that most motoring journalists appear to really dislike the new engine. Will opinions affect resale value in the future I wonder.
So what to do? Keep the 981, change to a 718 GTS or wait and see if they announce a 6 cylinder Boxster ( not a spyder)
Any thought folks?

Hmmm, dilemma. I too find the 4-pot a charmer. Instant torque, always. Totally driveable as a daily, too. I can't see them releasing an F6 unless it's a GT or Spyder model, however I was wrong about them installing a 6er in the 718. If you believe all that you read, the 981 that you have is a real gem, especially in Aqua Blue.

You pays your money...

Yep - that's what I said! I don't think there will be a 6er below GT models.

It certainly is a dilemma. I still love my 981. It has performed very well over the years and especially when me and my wife went across to Europe for a month long tour. It performed well on every road and took all our luggage too,but it's time for a change.
I found the 718 GTS very driveable and liked the extra power and torque. It looks nice too especially in the Carmine Red. I don't want a Cayman GT4 as I like a convertible and I don't want a Spyder as I like a decent hood and PDK for every day driving. It appears that build slots for a 718 GTS are limited. Probably because they don't sell many even though just about every Porsche Centre in the country has one as a Demo car.

When I had my 981 CS (4 years), I was never blown away with the 718's, once I got over that extra rush of power, which only really manifested itself (to me at least) when rolling along past 40/50 mph. That said, I'm 2 years into a diesel Macan and I'm sure a drive of a 718S now would blow my socks off?

I think that we are far enough beyond the demise of the 6er engines in the Boxman platform, for the future desirability questions to be a thing of the past?

My CS would be 6 years old now and about the same mileage as yours and I often wish I'd kept it, not least because we had and still have a Q5 for the things I thought I needed the Macan for?

None of this rambling helps whatsoever - so the bottom line is, if it works for you, go for it. Failing that, you are still driving a car that many would give their right arms to be driving, so it's a win-win.

Oh, edited for gratuitous pic time. :)

We upgraded to Cayman 718 GTS from 981 GTS and don't regret it.
It's not just power / power delivery that's different but the chassis and the turn have been fine tuned too. It's a sharper tool in our eyes.
No idea about residuals though. Ours is a daily driver.
Our stable:
- 992 Carrera T - manual - Ruby Star Neo - Carrera Excl. wheels (2023)
- BMW 240i xDrive (G42) - Portimao Blue - AC Schnitzer tune
ex: 981 Cayman GTS, Macan S Diesl, Macan Turbo, 991.2 Carrera S, 718 Cayman GTS, i30 N, 718 Cayman GTS 4.0

I am obviously biased. had ours a year now. Used as our third car for blasts when the sun is shining. Love it. Handling is immense, torque is impressive and whilst no NA flat 6 it makes a nice enough noise for my ears.
