Had the Cayman serviced this week and while waiting to collect had a chat about the forthcoming 718-6 and it looks like it will be announced in the Autumn with deliveries starting early next year. After flirting with the idea of other possibilities (V8 Mustang, AMV8 etc.) over the last year or 2 I decided to hold out and get one of these instead and I'm now glad I did.
As the Cayman is in such good condition and appears to have stopped depreciating I think we'll keep that and get a Boxster, so chop in the SLK which I won't need anymore as a commuter since we've both decided to retire next Spring before the change in IR35 rules kick in. Which in theory means more time for diving fun next summer
I guess that'll be the last hurrah before the all EV Cayster comes out.
718-6
There have been quite a few rumours about the 718-6 and the likelihood of it being the base 992 engine @ c 380 hp. I think that would be a very sweet combination if true.

^^^ Apparently customers haven’t generally taken well to the 4 pot engine, particularly its sound, and world wide sales haven’t been great. The release of the Taycan spreads the corporate emissions figures so allows Porsche to produce a new 718 that maybe isn’t quite as green as the current model.

If it’s priced right, I think a 6-cylinder 718 Cayman/Boxster would sell like hot cakes!
The only possible downside (for Porsche) is that it may cannibalise some 911 sales.
Seems the relative unpopularity of the 718 is indeed mostly down to the noise it makes, compared to the previous model. Some folks might also not be keen on having ‘only’ a 4-cylinder engine in their Porsche...

I think the performance of the 718 S and GTS is already into 911 territory and they are very different cars with very different appeals so I'm not sure that it is much of an issue TBH.Wing Commander wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2019 9:16 am If it’s priced right, I think a 6-cylinder 718 Cayman/Boxster would sell like hot cakes!

I had a flat six in my last Boxster. Very smooth. I now have the flat four in my 718S, with 350bhp. The 6er was brilliant and sounded great, but it needed to be at the top end of the rev range to get the full beans. With the turbo 4, full torque is available across the whole rev range, from 1950rpm. It really is driveable in all gears, in all conditions. I love it.
Would I go for a F6 again? Possibly, but if it returns to the characteristics of the old 6ers, then I'd probably stay put with the 4. To me the trade off between driveability and noise is a no brainer; mine's a daily driver and I much prefer the drive over the noise. Plus the 4 isn't bad, it's just different.

The difference between the old flat 6 and the new flat 6 in the cayman will be that it will likely be turbo charged and that will mean a better sound than the 4 cylinder turbos and torque available at the lower end.happy days wrote: ↑Fri Oct 04, 2019 11:24 am I had a flat six in my last Boxster.
