Just got my 911 GTS back from OPC after brake work (more on that in another post soon) but while it was there they discovered a leaking water pump. Apparently they have recently been replacing quite a few pumps on 911s, including at least one 992 that only had 1000 miles on it. There appears to have been a dodgy batch and PGB have recalled all the affected stock pumps. Even some replacement pumps have failed but now there is a modified pump, which mine now has. It's a pretty big job and the first few were done with the engine out but a revised procedure has been developed which can be done in situ.

This sounds to me like a big problem which is yet to emerge more widely and it's possible there may even be a recall. Mine's a March '18 car so it would seem there could be a large number of cars affected.

Message to owners is to keep an eye out for telltale coolant drips.

I had mine done at about a year old. There was another in the workshop for the same thing when mine was there. I would be amazed if the job needed engine out as the water pump is at the very back of the car and relatively easily accessed. I do keep an eye on it now but all seems well at the moment.

Yes, those are the telltale pink stains. Despite looking fairly easy to access, a lot of ancillaries and pipework needs removing to get at the pump so not as easy as it might seem.

Interestingly Clarkson reviewed a Cayman GT4 last month and to his surprise the water pump failed during his test drive. The same part as the 911 perhaps?

Yes Nick, I fully agree that its not the job of a few minutes. Even simple things on modern cars are difficult with tightly packaged engine bays. I could see that the other car in the workshop had its rear well stripped to gain access. Sadly long gone are the days when there was so much room under the bonnet that you could just about stand in the engine bay and work at components.

Thanks for this update, Nick. Useful to hear. Every time that my T is in at either Swindon or Tewkesbury, I get them to do a precautionary visual inspection of my water pump.

My car is off to Tewkesbury on Monday to have the winter tyres/wheels fitted. I’ve mentioned three things for them to look at:

* Precautionary inspection of water pump
* Condensation/dampness inside the indicator lens on the front wing, driver’s side
* In the recent cold & wet weather, my car keeps showing a warning for low tyre pressure in the left-hand tyres, especially the rear left. When I inspect the tyres, they seem fine and the dashboard shows that the tyre pressures on the left are the same as for the tyres on the right-hand side. I am running with comfort pressure/part load.

When I had my water pump changed the Tec said that Porsche would not be keen to change the pump unless it was dripping. If it was only a weep they might well say that was ok. Luckily, if you can call it that, mine was leaking badly and when they had it on there customer inspection lift it was dripping steadily. The car still hadn't brought and low coolant level or anything so couldn't have lost much at all.
