If you are “in control” of your car which includes being stopped at lights, in a traffic jam or whatever then you can’t use a handheld device. Unless of course you a taking a video or picture (the current law is idiotic). I totally agree that people shouldn’t use their phones whilst driving but the insurance situation is also absurd. So you get 6 points and your current insurer whacks up your premium but you can move insurer and negate that effect. All a bit weird really!

Using a phone at all whilst in control of a car is, quite rightly, breaking the law. However, it is just as dangerous using menu-driven touch screens that are now common place in almost every vehicle, the Tesla being the worst example. Call me a luddite, but physical switches which you can locate without much conscious effort, will always be the safer alternative.

I have noticed lately a lot of drivers in the oncoming traffic not looking where they are going but looking down at the centre screen. Every bit as dangerous as being on the phone but as virtually every new car has this system there its only a matter of time before the resulting accidents become a problem. It took ten years for the mobile phone issues to surface and them be banned.

Looks like operating a mobile phone is permitted, if it is mounted to the windshield or dashboard... at least for now!

Technology is evolving fast from command line interface, for those who remember MS DOS; through the graphical user interface, current tech; to natural user interface in the next gen cars. Exciting times ahead.
