If they applied the changes to existing vehicles, the impact on values of cars caught would mean those companies financing such cars by PCP would take massive losses forcing them into insolvency. so I think that unlikely
I always thought the last set of Cartax changes made during George Osbourne's reign went the wrong way. The luxury car tax was a revenue protection exercise and actual discouraged purchase of some quite efficient vehicles. One of the reasons I changed vehicle in 2019 was that greater taxes on higher emitting vehicles was always going to happen if manufacturers were not discouraged from producing them by the EU taxes on the overall range emission average.

I thought Government had moved diesels up a CO2 band to remove their CO2 tax advantage and hence discourage their continued purchase,
Let's hope the increased EV's to be supported leads to rapid growth in the number and spread of fast chargers so EV's can work for those trips they currently do not

..... all a bit grim a the moment, but I'm expecting some very shiny cars out there when we are all set free again
(I am contemplating how to get the tail pipes off to give them deep clean or perhaps I should respray the Dexta, so many things a man can do when in social isolation )
