I used to drive into London (20 odd years ago). It's just completely nuts to do that now imo.
Train journey is much quicker and probably a fair bit cheaper too (even though I do complain about the train fares sometimes).
Public transport in London again is generally much quicker than car / taxi too.
If public transport can become what 2017 deserves then I would think many more people will choose this option to get into and around the main city's.

This is so true. But so many people are prepared to commute for 1-2 hours each way every day. It is so expensive to move house that I can see some logic, but I wouldn't do it. 10 minutes is plenty for me!
Some people have no choice: either they can't afford to move close to work or work isn't permanent enough to move, I know I have been in second position. When I got more permanent offer, I moved closer then they moved where I was based due to closing site,
My office is 40 miles from home.
I leave at 0530 and it takes anywhere between 45mins and 1hr 15mins as it did this morning.
Getting the train isn't feasible - 45mins into London and then an hour on the tube to get to the opposite side of London. Journey cost £40.50 and that's assuming the trains are on time.
This country wants us all to do the green thing but do not provide the structure to do so. Instead they'll punish the motorist regardless even though they offer no practical or cost effective solution.

That is so true
The last few years I had an 18 mile commute, it took 1/2 hour on the motorbike for most of the year.
I did see about using public transport, 2 hours to get there which involved a walk of 1 mile to get from the station to work, as for cost 6x more expensive than putting fuel in the bike.
Mind you the journey home on the bike often took 2 hours and way more fuel

The only way to effectively cut travel pollution is to reduce the vehicle journeys people have to take to get to work. That's why I walk to work. Or take bus/bike/train if I absolutely have to.Have done for 20 odd years.ÂOne of the reasons I'm happy driving what I do as none of my miles is wasted on commuting or tedious chores.
+1. I too am lucky enough to be able to walk to work every day, so doing my bit Monday to Friday for the planet

The joys of working 7.2 miles from the office - small town to cross then 6 miles on dual carriageway. Takes me about 10 minutes from door to door.

I'm only 9 miles from home to office, there's some days I wish it were a lot longer with an open road and heavy right foot. I do get to do loads of business miles though (and all expensed) so happy days really.

Used to have a 240 mile each way weekly commute.
Really looked forward to jumping into the 928 every Friday afternoon with a load of decent music.
Getting up on Monday at 3-00am for a 2.5 hour drive back wasn't as much fun.
