The Macan isn't even considered so can we take seriously anything these people write?

You've been out in that Italian sun too long Mike! " Top gear" and " serious" aren't often found in the same phrase😉
Having said which, quite an interesting read!

Top gear mag is on a power with the Beano when it comes to proper car analysis.
As Paul says it makes an interesting read, just don't take it any more serious the Dennis the Menace

Given the spread from a Duster to a Bentayga, there's bound to be some missing.

The Macan would compare unfavourably with many on those present, so probably good it wasn't there!
Used to have 2016 Macan Turbo PHCKCL70
Previously a 2014 Macan Turbo.
Now a 2021 Tesla Model 3 LR

Totally meaningless comparison.

Someone considering a Bentley isnt going to be looking at a Peugeot or a Dacia.

You would think most people have some idea what they want from a car be it practicality, performance, off road ability etc. A test which pitches cars against each other in categories ( off road , luxury..) might be some use.

Having said that I don't suppose the people at TG meant his to be useful. At least I hope that's the case.

It would be a shock is the Bentayga did not win. But the article is aimed more at looking at very similar vehicle across a range of prices and market sectors, so in that respect I found it interesting. The fact that a Porsche was not represented, could also be said of there being no Merc or BMW and other marques.

Not sure why the Macan gets ignored so often.

My guess - because it is too good :D

Having spent 4 proper hours dune bashing in the UAE / Omani deserts I would not want a Macan for that either, it was all Cruisers with the odd Defender thrown in. The Macan is not a SUV just as the 911 is not a F1 car and that whole thing was populism at best. Those who buy TG mag ain't buying much in the way of that list of cars...

Define best - what is best for me, might not be best for others especially when you consider affordability and practicality.
