Lots of satnavs do this. They all use position error correction to place you on a road they know exist. If it doesn't, or can't be sure, it puts you on the wrong, adjacent one or just off road.
Rule of thumb. If the road is new, or there are many roadworks, look at the road signs and listen to your wife.
There really is no substitute for retrospective advice.

It was an actual photo taken in 2014 on a family holiday to the Montpellier area. It's taken from the observation point on the north side of the bridge. There's a great visitor centre there with the full story of how they built it. You do have to pay to cross, from memory it was around €8 each way back then. Here's one of us driving over it.
