Interesting to note that the hybrid version now accounts for 60% of Panny sales.

I wonder if the majority of those are company car / business users for the much lower benefit-in-kind tax rate?

Indeed the figure is slightly misleading as a significant proportion is from the Scandinavian countries where 90% are hybrids.

I would certainly think so, few people give any serious thought about the environment. Although maybe the recent diesel scandals have increased awareness, so there will be a few buyers moving from diesel to hybrid on the back of that. Probably quite a lot actually.

I'll bet sales of £40,000 + cars have dropped too because of the tax increases.

For sure it's all mainly driven by money. I don't believe for one second that the average Joe in the street gives a monkeys about the environment (at least not if it's going to either inconvenience him a bit and/or cost him more money). That's just how it is in our First World bubble.

I can't see how sticking an extra £300+ on the VED of a car over £40k for the first 5 years, is either fair, or going to help save the planet TBH?

I think a lot of people "think they care about the environment" but only do the things that suits them. for example -

Flying first class to the Bahamas to discuss global warning :?
Buying a hybrid Porsche to drive the kids 1 mile to school :?
Take 4 overseas holidays a year and turn off a few lights to save the planet :?
Flush the toilet once a day to save water (especially useful in Scotland) :?
Drive 10 miles to Waitrose to buy lots of environmentally friendly products :?

I could go on......... :D
