That's a great review on the M5. It just doesn't look special enough but maybe that is what the M5 market wants. We reluctantly sold our Macan SD back to Porsche Chester after DPF issues and bought a pre-registered M3 Competition Pack with 23 miles on the clock. It's a great car and very different to the Macan. Obviously much more powerful with 444hp on tap and it can get a little ridiculous in the wet being only rear wheel drive. I would agree that the tech (satnav etc) is much better in the BMW. Ironically, there is also more legroom in the back than in the Macan. It does produce a great noise through the straight 6. The DCT thought is not quite as good as PDK in that it is not as smooth or as easy to revert to auto from manual or paddles. There is no rear centre armrest or cup holders in the back of the M3 (my biggest annoyance) yet there is in the most basic 3 series! It is much more thirsty and has a smaller fuel tank. We get 31.5mpg on a run whereas we used to get 44mpg from the Macan. It is slightly harder on the suspension yet the M3 does not have run-flats.

SD to an M3 definitely sounds like a step in the right direction!

Your M3 looks smart - more aggressive and sporty than M5. Size wise it’s probably near as dammit as practical as M5. They are seriously good value too. Checked my GTS and after 14k miles ive averaged 18.1 mpg so the M3 isn’t that bad!

Great write up on the M5.
I was averaging 22mpg in my M3 but only around 17mpg in my GTS.

The next generation M3 will be interesting especially if it is switchable 4wd as in the M5. Prices on the M5 have come down a lot but like others have said just doesn't look special enough.

Hi Phil,

The new RS6 is being launched soon, moving from Macan to Avant would give you all the space you need!

Good write up. Considered buying an M5 before I purchased my 2017 Macan turbo, but decided I’d sacrifice some performance for comfort and never owned an suv before. My car has air susp as well. Funny thing is, I almost bought the exact same car in the picture (the white one) in a private sale.. but didn’t like the colour scheme.

He wrote it a year ago 😏

I tried one too and thought it was fun as a loaner too but thought it would be boring as long term prospect

Had previous one on loan too. Almost killed me several times being only the 2wd one
