2016 DRL with xenons, not LED

I always keep the lights in Auto but I’ve noticed the DRL strip is sometimes on and sometimes off. What would cause this? I presumed the DRL would be on all of the time?!
Your post headline implies Bi-Xenon lights, in which case the DRL is the four LED "dots" around the headlight.

I thought there were halogen, Xenons and LEDS? 3 separate light options?
There have been three light options but I cannot recall whether there was a time when all three were available concurrently.
With halogen headlights, the DRL function was achieved using the inner set of headlights. In all other variants, the inner headlights are dummies.
The "strip" under the headlight units is for the indicators. In my Cayenne (2013) that strip combined the function of DRL and indicator but I do not think it ever carried over to the Macan.

This is a stock image of mine with the same lights.
I thought the strip lights in your version with xenon headlights function as front side lights only and the ‘4 dots’ around the xenon headlight function as DRLs. As previously mentioned, halogen headlights in the 2016 model featured inner incandescent bulbs as DRLs.
In our car (LED lights) the DRLs are the 4 rectangles around the main bulb and the inner area reflects the light sideways at low speeds to help light the ‘turn’. The strip light is a side light at the bottom with indicator above.

If the older lights (xenon or led) function in the same way as my 2019 model Macan, then the strip light only comes on when dipped beam are on and bi functions as indicator signal.
When drl’s are on only during the day, the strip light is off.

Very confused now. Went out in the dark and when set to auto the right outer light is on and the strip light. When I switch it to off the smaller inside light to the left comes on without the strip. No 4 spot LED.
To the best of my knowledge, if your car has active inner headlights then it is fitted with halogen headlights. As I said in an earlier post, the inner headlights act as DRLs on cars fitted with halogen headlights. For both Bi-Xenon and LED headlights, the inner headlights are dummies.
As others have pointed out (and I had forgotten) the strip below the headlight unit provides the sidelight function as well as indicator.
