Cracked rear brake covers

As you may be aware the rear brakes are generic with a branded cover plate. The cover plate on my 2016 S (35K miles) has growing cracks on the driver’s side (both pics) and is showing signs of similar on the near side as the paint (?) is also lifting from one edge.

My first thought was that it was damaged sustained when discs and pads were replaced in December. But research led me to the US forum and a thread about the cover plate simply disappearing.

This therefore suggests to me that it’s a fatigue issue. See pics attached. [img]

That looks scary. Does that crack on the second pic', extend into the main body of the calliper?, it looks like it may do. If so, TBH I would be very cautious about driving the vehicle, if at all. If it goes pop, your front brakes will work, but there will be no rears to stabilize it.
Then this one may be crash tested.

Hopefully ??? not a major issue if only the "Porsche" cover plate is cracked / worn.

Is it easy just to fit a new "Porsche" cover plate?

I will check mine.

Thankfully it appears limited to just the plate. But I agree that if it fell off it could seriously compromise the brakes or cause serious damage if it were propelled somewhere.

Ah, that’s the thing… it’s not available as a replacement part!!! Entire calliper only!!!

Here’s the link to the US thread…

If the discs and pads were replaced by OPC in December guessing you haven’t racked up many miles since then? Definitely get them to check it out as there shouldn’t be any undue stress on that component to cause the cracking. May have been heavy handed when refitting, also does look like the caliper has a hairline surface crack? Difficult to tell from the photo.

Looks like corrosion under the surface coating, therefore only cosmetic.

The thing is that the covers are not available as a separate part - at least they’re not listed. If not available at all then it means replacing the entire calliper! There’s also a history (in the US) of them falling off.

So it’s also a potential liability. Question: when did a cosmetic issue ever become a safety issue?

My Macan is 2015 with similar mileage to you.

My cover plates appear to be fine and in fact look quite new.

I had the discs and pads replaced recently and wonder if my covers have been replaced. I hadn't really been aware of them being damaged or replaced for that matter.

The bill lists brake pad repair set - P9A769845100 (not sure if this has new covers included)

If the only route available is by new callipers, and if you're up for a challange, you could have new ones made. From something like stainless steal, or the like, this would cost a couple of quid. All you would need to find is a CNC machineist, that could do the process, but would need to be exact with the locating dowels. And then replace the logo's.
A company like brakecaliperdecals, could supply them. Could save a Grand or so.

I haven't done my rears as yet, so done some further investigations. You say that your rear's have been done recently. It depends what type of piston retraction tool was used when doing so. It may be that one tool type needed those front covers to be removed, and it was the removal process that caused them to fracture.
