I've been rocking my 24GB "3" data SIM since Boxing Day last year (2016) and I've still got 17.7GB left. Expires Christmas Day 2018.

So it's likely I would have managed with just 12 instead of 24GB for the same two-year period.

+1

March enabled and 20gb left and still 18 months left.
Not bad for £25 one off payment.
Can't get them anymore on 24 months and prices have shot up. 😟
Incredible value and if they return I will certainly buy one to keep and register when required.

Just realised that my one year SIM deal has now ended.

Sods are wanting £30 for Data that is only good for 30 days.

Time to hunt out another new SIM card.
After a hunt around I found that a 3 SIM on MyMemory was the cheapest at £25 for 12Gb over 12 months.

Which is the same as I originally installed but a bit more expensive.

Suspect these data usage figures are very individual.

For example I use about 1gb month, mostly downloading / steaming music / video. I don't use Google earth or any of the wonderful apps that Porsche provide but have downloaded some map updates.

Of course it's individual

I've only done about 3000 miles since I started using this card (and stream/navigate on most of them, wife iPad surfing on about 1/3).
If you're an oil-burner fan and do 20k motorway miles every 6 months, you're probably going to use more.

Also, if you use a decent network like EE, you're going to use a lot more data a lot faster, that "3" can dish up.

I'm providing a personal anecdotal comment on usage of sim cards with respect to a previous comment that these sims are not available any more.

Countering it with an obvious statement is, well as you say, what's the point?

Regarding the OPC setting up the SIM - I agree with the learned Col Lamb due to my experience that theres far more trickery behind that SIM slot and the OPC can explain like mine did...
For example...I live in CH on the border with France and Germany. I took the SIM offer from Porsche and they are contracted to Orange. Here in this corner of the world the coverage across the borders varies with each provider so sometimes the coverage with Orange is poor whilst the coverage on my mobile phone with swisscom is better and vice versa.
The OPC took the time to show me how easy it was to tether my mobile phone to the PCM and how easy it was then to select either the Orange SIM card or my mobile phone as the data provider. Just brilliant, particularly now my wife has almost unrestricted data on her new contract so when she is with me we have much greater options.
Hope this was of interest.
