If there are Diesel engines with comparable performance, then it's difficult to see how VW were so far off the pace that they were the only ones that had to fiddle it!

But the manufacturers have been kicked around to achieve high mpg, low 0-60, highly reliable, cost effective and clean engines, whilst the latest green target got dreamt up.

I bought 7 VW Golfs in a row from 1996 to 2017, keeping them for an average of three years. I bought our last one about a week before the emissions scandal emerged. It was a great car, very economical, regularly returning in excess of 55mpg. Our previous Golf wasn't as good, returning around 50mpg.

If anybody is interested in this type of stuff, check out the Dirty Money series on Netflix. The first episode is about the VW scandal. It’s a bit Americanised, but it is a real eye opener.

I was reading yesterday about a number of manufacturers whose Euro 6 diesels are a disgrace; Fiat, for example. Apparently a wrinkle in the regs allowed them to register as being compliant before the actual test came into effect. The Eurocrats do it again!
