Macan GTS first service

Post by MCDK » Thu Sep 13, 2018 11:41 am

Got a quote for the first service on my Macan GTS with Porsche Belfast. Quote was £425 plus £95 for brake fluid change.

Car is just coming up on 2 years so its due but only 6500 miles. Few questions :

How does the price compare with others are paying. I went back asking about some discount to which I was told the benefit of the dealership having signed up to the Porsche menu price is that they have already applied £100 discount. Not sure of that to be honest.

Asked about supplying my own oil and the saving is £158. Got the spec of oil Mobil 1 0W-40 8 litres needed. A quick Amazon search shows 5 litres costing less than £40 so it seems a no brainer. Are there better options for buying oil or any advice there?

Brake fluid I asked to remove from quote and got all the stories of moisture content etc and how its highly recommended. At such low mileage and with the car kept in a warm heated garage I struggle to see any issue with not changing it. I know some might say its £95 and I drive a Porsche etc etc but why throw away on something that isn't needed.

And then got some quotes for the service from highly regarded Porsche specialists at about 65% of dealer cost.

I'm a tight old sod lol but like decent value.

The price is pretty consistant since it is what I actually paid yesterday for the 2 year service of my Turbo. There is also or rather there should be a bottle of oil left in the car after the service.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic which means that it naturally absorbs water and low mileage has nothing to do with it, in fact since air holds more water at higher temperatures your heated garage offers the potential for more water to be absorbed into the brake fluid than it would in my cold garage.

Brake fluid change is a safety feature, why compromise on safety?

BTW you cannot be a tight old sod, if you were you would not be driving a Porsche!

Where does the brake fluid get the water to absorb? Surely its a sealed system?

There are millions of cars on the road with very very old brake fluid and they all stop it seems. Seems like a bit of a money making scheme by the manufacturers but then so does charging more than double the oil cost especially when they are buying bulk and thus even cheaper.

If you look at what they actually do in a 1st service you will realise that the price is daylight robbery but, if you ever have a problem in the future and you haven't had your car serviced by Porsche in line with the service schedule then you are unlikely to get any goodwill gesture towards repairs which can be very expensive indeed. I agree with you on the brake fluid front too but would have it done as a matter of course after 2 years

Totally agree VanB on the daylight robbery bit. First service is an oil and filter change that can be done very quickly, yes they do all the visual checks but that's a simple job. Also agree its important for warranty and goodwill, whilst I would be tempted to go down the Independent Specialist route I don't think I will to keep the Porsche stamp in the book.

Jury still out on the brake fluid as its seems a stage even further than daylight robbery but they know most people will say go for it.

I concur with what was said above, if you drive a Porsche you can't be tight. God help you if you crack an alloy! If £95 hurts you, don't eat or drink out...ever! LOL!

Count yourself lucky I paid £674 last month for the 2 year service including the brake fluid change (which personally I see as a safety issue so wouldn't skimp on that regardless of mileage).

Putting Porsche servicing into perspective I paid £550 for the last SLK service including brake fluid change and I'll pay another £250 next month as the service for those is 15k miles or 12 months so in that respect the Macan is a bit of a bargain.

You can get cheaper servicing but a premium product will invariably cost more to maintain and run.
If I'm not on here I'm out in my Bright Voodoo Blue GTS having fun

I haven't ever cracked an alloy and won't :) haven't even so much as kerbed a wheel in over 30 years of driving.

The whole experience of owning a Porshe and being ripped off starts the day you order/pay for the vehicle, that’s why Porsche is the most profitable motor manufacturer in the world, they make more % money per vehicle than any one else,I’ve just purchased 4 Porsche coloured Center Wheel caps for my 911 £114 and 2 Porsche rubber mats £75 expensive yes but I wanted genuine Porsche parts and imo I will have my Porsche serviced at the OPC using Porsche technicians using Porsche recommended materials and serviced Porsche guidelines ,then get the OPC Porsche stamp in the service book after all wouldn’t want to break the rip off trail that started the day I took delivery.

Porsche is the most profitable car manufacturer per unit sold, Toyota is the most profitable car manufacturer.

Doesn't alter the fact that servicing costs are a rip-off. I want to keep the Porsche stamp in the book too so will probably end up selling my children but at least they would then be off the payroll!

Actually and to be fair my wife's Q5 costs more to service than the Macan did over the same period and my daughter's C1 isn't that far behind and that really is an eye-watering rip-off
