New transfer box to be fitted next week.

I have only noticed on occasion when on lock that I get a little hop, skip jump from the back.
No other issues noticed. Drives like a dream.
Whilst in for a service A couple of weeks ago I asked OPC to check the transfer box as I had this minor issue on some occasions with this skipping on lock. They could of easily brushed it off and said nothing wrong and I would have been fine with it.
But I have to say I was impresssed with their honesty and said yes it needs a new transfer box which has been ordered.
And this is a modified box (stops the water getting in which apparently causes the issue)
I am not sure if anyone with a replacement modified transfer box has had the issue again? The early transfer box replacements were not modified from what I have been told.
I think it would be a good idea for anyone who has had a transfer box replaced to check the part number to see if it’s the modified version or not.

I will update once fitted and if I notice any changes.
I had the transfer box replaced today. Took around 4 hours.
My minor hop, skip, jump issue explained above seems to have gone.
It’s a new sealed unit so no water should get in to cause anymore issues.
The paperwork stated the engineer confirmed there was a transfer box issue and to be replaced.

If anything changes I will update accordingly.

The car was part exchanged for a new GTS a few thousand miles later.
GTS has done 5,300 miles no problems so far.
Hi Salty, any particular advice or guidance as to how you managed to convince OPC to lower costs to you, despite being out of warranty? I may need to pursue this route if I have any issues with the RAC Warranty I have.

And just to add to the thread; suspected transfer box failure on Macan S (Petrol). It's a late 2015 model, with 30k miles. Will know more next week...

Thanks!

Story so far

Had replies with a sample of 53 cars. Out of these, 30 cars have had no issues. Out of the remaining 23 cars, there have been 26 transfer boxes.

Assuming it's specific to the part (not a Monday/Friday built car) then it's roughly 50% failures. I find that quite shocking.

Transfer box issues have been a big problem on all VW group 4x4 vehicles, not just Macan, for the last fifteen years. The fault I had on my 2004 Touareg seems to exactly the same as Macans are suffering to this day. It is startling that the biggest car company in the world cant get to the bottom of this over such a length of time.

Forum members are more likely to recognise problems with the transfer box because it is well publicised on this site. Just because you have a 50% failure rate on a small sample size doesn't give any indication of how many failures might have occurred on the 16k total UK Macan population.

Macan S Petrol - March 2016 - 7000miles no issues.
Booked in end Feb for MOT and 111point check to renew Porsche Approved Warranty. Given the issues raised here I will 'bite the bullet' and extend warranty at £1440 for 2 years in anticipation of future transfer box issues!
Has it been accepted that this is due to water ingress and if so can Porsche not recommend some kind of retrofit 'device' to help prevent water ingress?
