How accurate is a compass inside a car given it relies on sensing a weak magnetic field that will be influenced by other magnetic fields inside a car like speakers and those generated by electromotive forces eg relay operation and current flow. In addition to these issues the compass will sit inside a metal box the car body work which will block signals. Ships also use a compass inside a metal box but to ensure accuracy I believe they adopt a compensation process which are adjusted to account for outside influences. I suspect if you place a compass on the dash then in the boot the result will be two different readings.

I think that the dashboard compass just uses GPS as a feed !

I agree it must be tied in with GPS/SatNav so no influence from local magnetic fields....

I can think of one who would need it. I have a school friend who every time he gets in one of my cars grumbles that the navigation map is set to the direction of travel is at the top. He always sets his to the north at the top as"that is how maps are published". that would drive me crazy as one needs to know where north is to put the map in the context of the environment one is in.

The compass is a nice aesthetic feature, somewhat redundant just like my wrist-watch [emoji851]
