Apparently this stuff has to be carefully stored and has a shelf life ?

I've seen nothing to suggest that Adblue is any more complex than a simple aqueous solution of urea - see:

I think all the other metals etc listed are just maximum permitted impurity levels, since the minimum of each is zero.

I'd expect that if the Adblue got too cold then some of the urea might precipitate out because the solubility limit would have been reached, but without checking the solubility curve for urea too cold is probably a pretty low temperature.

We used to dissolve and use 8M urea (480g/l IIRC) in the lab often - it's a standard reagent for denaturing proteins.

This doesn't mean that a concentrated urea solution doesn't degrade if stored long-term, especially at higher temperatures or open to the air so that eg CO2 can be absorbed, so unopened shelf-life can still be important.

I bought the 10 litre Greenchem pack from Eurocarparts . Greenchem seem to be one of the main market leaders . Useful booklet link here : http://www.halfords.com/wcsstore/libraries/document/AdBluebooklet.pdf

Just filled up my Adblue tank. Got my son to give me a hand as handling a 10 litre container is a bit tricky. Worked easily enough though using the flexi tube that came with the container. Only managed to squeeze in about 7 litres though before it started bubbling back out of the filler tube. Warning light has disappeared.

Some time ago there was a really good tip on the forum about filling with Adblue. Apologies to the person who posted it as I've forgotten the name.

When you experience the blow back, put the cap back on then drive the car around the block. After that carry on topping up. It worked a treat for me.

BTW, the tank took over 20L from when the warning light came on until it was completely full again.

Surely the adblue in the car's tank would be subject to cold and time lapses too?

I wondered that as well. I think Adblue is not meant to be stored at less than -11c. Now I know it is rare for us to get such low temps but a few years back we did get -15c . I assume continental Europe regularly gets less than -11c so what happens to the Adblue - does it crystallise ?

I would say that my Macan uses roughly 1litre per 1000 miles. That's just a rough calculation based on what I've put in from new, including an estimate of what was in it when I got the car. Now coming up to 20000 miles.

Good info. Not sure if type of driving will affect the consumption - motorway / short journeys.

I will top up in the next couple of months and try to estimate consumption.

There must be considerable variation as I only got about 600 miles per litre. My main driving involves motorways and dual carriageways.

Just about to top the ad blue after 11,000 miles.
Can anybody advice how much to put in? I know that the tank is 23 litre but a bit concerned about overfilling.

I don't think you can overfill - a bit like petrol, it just runs out all over the back wing as the filler pipe backs up......wash off quickly with warm soapy water.......TBH I'd wait for the light to come on.........

As Paul advises, wait until the warning comes on, you'll have 1000 miles or more of range.

So, the Adblue tank is 20 litres capacity, petrol cars could use an extra 20 litres fuel capacity, so come on Porche, think it through, a 95/100 litre petrol tank would be good.
