Another replacement box here, 16000 miles and 2.5 years old. Glad to get it replaced before the warranty expires. Concerned to hear replacement boxes are failing. Took two weeks to get the box from Germany and work completed.

I've just had mine replaced at 40k when it was in for its service. two and a half years old. It had been playing up for a few weeks so I warned the OPC and they had it replaced along with service in 3 days. And I got to rag their 718 Boxster around in the meantime.

How many 'replacement failures' do we know about now? And at what mileage?

The recent replacement failure we heard about (Crawford's) was so short-lived that I can't help feeling there was something wrong with it when it was fitted.

Just had an interesting experience servicing the Mazda.

This was time to do the transmission oils; gearbox was dirty but ok, diff was fairly clean but transfer box was filthy with a significant amount of sludge on the magnetic bung.

Suggests the transfer boxes have a relatively hard life

First box swapped at 16.5 k on July then the second replaced this week with 26k ? Not great for any brand never mid Porsche, I haven been told it’s a sealed unit so they just swapped it out, no waiting for the transfere box as they have appearantly stock piled these now :o

I’ve been experiencing similar symptoms on my 2015 Macan diesel S with just over 30000 miles on the clock. This is my first Porsche BTW. When I pull away from a standstill on perfectly smooth tarmac it feels like I’m driving over small bumps also judder when reversing up any sort of incline. Is this an acknowledged problem by Porsche whereby they will replace the transfer box as a gesture of good will? My vehicle is now out of its standard warranty. I feel this is totally unacceptable on a car of this “quality” which has had just one service and is barely run in by my way of thinking.

Updated 12th December. After contacting the OPC at Leeds that supplied the car new, not to me I hasten to add. I was told it would be 16 days before they could book it in for a diagnostic check at a shade under £180 an hour then a few days after that before they could carry out any repair. A replacement unit including labour & VAT would cost somewhere between £3,500 to £4000 They acknowledged there had been issues with transfer boxes on Macans but couldn’t make any promises with regards to any sort of financial compensation as the vehicle was out now out of warranty. As the macan is my only car, having to wait that length of time together with the associated cost of a hire car was a none starter for me. I decided to contact a Porsche specialist recommended to me Nienmeister based in Warrington. The box has been exchanged & work was completed within a week costing just under £1800. The oil that came out of the original unit was rank & the failures are a result of flawed design, there have been modifications to later boxes. I’d never take the car to a main Porsche dealer in future. Find a specialist that you can trust, are passionate about their work, won’t take the p*** with their prices.

In view of the large number of replacement transfer boxes fitted I guess most Porsche mechanics should be able to replace a box blindfold by now 😄 £3500 to £4000 is taking the p**s.

Mancman,

I think you have been very badly treated by your dealer. My S (petrol) was also out of warranty albeit by only a few months and with only 20,000 miles on the clock but my experience with OPC Reading was totally different:
- quoted £180 inspection fee on the phone but diagnosed by a mechanic within minutes whilst I waited at no charge
- quoted £2,500 for a new transfer box including fitting BUT would put in a 'goodwill' claim to Porsche
- 'goodwill' claim accepted- Porsche would pay for all the parts, all I had to pay was a £500 contribution to labour
- fitted in a day.
- is covered for 12 months.

I think you gave up too early on.

I can understand why Mancman went independent. Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask.
