Any issues with transfer boxes are unlikely to be confined to diesels as petrol Cayennes have had transfer box issues for years. I suspect that the percentage of failures are fairly low. I don't think the boxes are sealed for life but do not know when the oil needs draining and refilling. Transfer box servos and ECUs can also be a problem on Cayennes.

A pistonheads member has posted similar issues and is having his 2.5 year old Macan looked at this week. Even if a car is out of warranty I would argue that this part should easily last 100,000 miles.

Absolutely, would agree with that. Could be an interesting discussion after the warranty expires though. Something to keep an eye on methinks.

The extra 25% torque on the diesel over the petrol S must put extra stress on the transmission and transfer box which should be built to cope with it.

The ex PEC cars must be most at risk therefore with the hammering they get.

It seems that this is across the range http://www.macanforum.com/forum/complaints/87514-tranfer-case.html

I presume Porsche have or are planning a fix for this, rather major, issue?

Just read all 8 pages on the US forum. Not surprisingly being the US all transfer case problems appear to be petrol S and Turbo Macans. Suspect that the Borg Warner transfer case is a little bit fragile for such a high performance 4x4.

If the Transfer Box is a weakness then anyone considering chipping their Macan for extra HP and torque should reconsider.

+1. If your transfer box fails and Porsche can see from the ECU data that you had a modification you can forget a warranty or consumer rights claim.

The Pistonheads chap has just been told by his OPC that his Macan needs a new transfer box at approx cost of £2,500. His car is 2.5 years old but only had the 2 year warranty. I would be relying on consumer protection laws and demanding it be replaced free of charge. Clearly Porsche have known issues with transfer boxes and in any event you expect engine and transmission parts to last more than a few years on a £50k + car.
