wonder how poor oil will affect longevity of the engine?

One of my first questions when it happened the first time was whether they'd measured the amount of oil that had come out. This came as a bit of surprise to them so don't think they'd thought about it.

Next question was a faulty sensor, again they don't think it's that because there was too much oil in it the second time around.

Both times its happened the warning has come on from a cold start-up.

Awaiting an update for today.

Surely if it's a faulty sensor it will give the warning ad infinitum, regardless of how many times they change the oil.
If they don't measure it how do they know there's too much oil in there?
Your dealer doesn't sound too clued up to me....

It must be a sensor with an intermittent fault. And a dodgy viscosity reading.

The obvious solution here is to fill with a known, measured, volume of oil and reserve a small amount in a container. If this happens again, it can be drained and the volume measured, then the reserved amount (that has not been through the engine) can be sent for direct comparison of the drained oil. That way you will be able to compare exact volumes and "original" oil with oil that has been used.

Can't imagine you want or need to mess about having oil viscosity measured ,oil level checked , this checked and that checked imo let the dealership have the vehicle, get a loaner from them and inform them you don't want it back until its sorted.

Update from the dealer, they want to refill the oil with measured amount, change the filter, run for it for a few miles and re-check the level. They'll do this tomorrow, I have a feeling they won't find anything on this short test.

I have a Jag XF from Enterprise as part of the Porsche assist recovery, it's no Porsche though and want mine back now.

Thats terrible and funny at the same time Those were the days when the batteries were bigger than the engine. Perhaps it an early hybrid and the idiot hasn't plugged it in.

Surely higher temp lower viscosity?

You're correct.

Never any good at proof reading my own stuff!

It gets more complicated with multigrade oils.

Indeed it does.

See here for a detailed exposition:

I fell into the trap of posting what I "know". Now I know what I don't know.Embarrassed

Did they actually measure the amount of oil they drained out?
It can't be coolant. It would be like mayonnaise in there.
Where's a good old fashioned dip stick when you need one.
I'd want them to drain it and refill with the correct amount again....

Depends which fluids get cooled by which radiator(s) and whether they run near each other. Back in the early 2000s Merc had a problem with their radiators (Valeo made). These radiators where made of plastic. The glue used in the welds didn't seal the pipes very well when the engines got hot. The end result was that microscopic amounts of engine coolant got mixed in with the drive train oil. I had a CLK at the time and by 25k miles the car felt like it was driving on ball bearings in a certain rev range. As bilun says above, it was the mayonnaise forming and the drive train running through it.
