I have family in Holland and regularly visit there. They never use the old type handbrake, not much point! However when they come over here, it's a regular sight to see their hire cars rolling away after they release the foot brake. Always amuses me. When they do their driving test, they have a big ramp for the hill starts.

The VW Tiguan system works slightly differently from the Golf R as described by Benz. There is a button called "auto hold" if selected it is active at all times when the driver's seat belt is engaged. When the car comes to a stand the rear brakes are applied (it even works if you roll to a halt without using the brakes). It releases as soon as the throttle is pressed. The actual parking brake works on all four wheels. It can be really useful when at a roundabout on slight gradients. With the brake pedal not applied the engine is running so no "Stop-start" delays in take off.

Really? extra pads on the front discs for parking? or does it use the normal brakes for hold like the Macan does?

The problem with PDK is that if you park on a hill ( as I do ) and forget to press the electronic parking brake then the car will roll back a bit and then the gearbox will lock up and it is very difficult to move the PDK leaver from park to drive.

When I park in my garage (most nights) I don't put on the parking brake. Never used the handbrake on previous cars.

Not steep enough for the HOLD to kick in then?

I figured that since Porsche put the park brake conveniently under your hand they intended it to be used manually. The Cayenne has the same switch but placed out of sight so never gets used. If you attempt to drive off with the door open ( I know, we do funny things here) the brake locks and you have to stop the engine and start all over again.

Not once the ignition is switched off.

Hmm, OK. I was thinking of the case where HOLD happens if you come to a stop when on a >5% gradient. I'd expect to come to a stop before I turned off the ignition. Maybe I'm misreading your use case :?

If you come to a stop on an uphill gradient using the foot brake , turn off the ignition and release the foot brake ( forgetting to switch the parking brake on ) then the car will roll back and lock the PDK gearbox. I inadvertently did it a few times in my 981 Boxster and a couple of times in the Macan and I can tell you that it is a bugger to shift the PDK lever once it has locked.
