Mine happens when I accelerate very gently and the revs run around 2000rpm. Reminds me of the old fashioned "pinking" noise from my old petrol cars when the timing was too advanced.
Of course, it happens when I'm in the car with my wife and doesn't tend to happen with others. It wasn't all the time - some days seemed worse than others.

I took it in to the Garage and as you could expect...all the way to the garage I couldn't replicate the problem. A mechanic sat in the passenger seat and whilst I could faintly hear the noise it was very backgroundish and the mechanic was not so sure.

Two points you might be interested in....The mechanic thought it would probably be down to ....(now here I apologise because the mechanic spoke German with some English and I speak English but can point in German)....he explained that there is a feedback from the exhaust gas to the ???? as it can run too hot and the feedback cools. He believed that the problem could lie there.

Because I was so frustrated and they had still not heard the problem the next step is for a day drive by the mechanic under normal use while i sit in a loaner.

Since, the temperature has dropped to around 3 to 5 degrees the noise is gone...it may be a temperature related issue?
I certainly think it engine management-related and therefore could come and go at different engine temperatures, different outside air temperatures and possibly different fuel. I am just glad it has gone! Hoping it doesn't come back but maybe it is not a serious problem if it is engine-management related and only occurs under special circumstances. If it was a pure mechanical problem, it wouldn't go away.

Mine does it when the weather is warm. It was so bad I was convinced it was mechanical. As soon as the weather changed to cold the noise disappeared, we wait until it returns but already they believe it’s to do with exhaust gas return being faulty

Thanks for that. I wondered if it was to do with cold and will see if mine returns when it warms up. Nice to know that they might be able to do something about it too.

Just a quick update. The mild engine 'rattle' noise has completely gone. Just started using branded fuel, not supermarket rubbish.

Occassional fill up with premium fuel such as Ultimate, but any ordinary branded fuel (my nearest is Gulf from a Co-op convenie) seems just as good. Also had first service, don't know if this made much difference, there wasn't a problem by then.

Engine is super smooth now.

I have always used Shell normal diesel for all three of My Macans which have always run quietly. My last Macan at 23000 miles was still as smooth as when new.

Actually my car is to be looked at in a months time - it seems the clattering noise is actually a faulty timing belt tensioner. Seems the hydraulic tensioner doesn’t work so well when the engine oil is hot. My friend had an Audi A6 with the same engine and it had the same fault!
Will let you know how this goes

Hi all, glad ;-) to see that other people experienced the problem my Macan shows since almost a year.
Problem: engine clattering (like a tractor) in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4rd gear, at around 1800rpm, when applying gentle acceleration.
Cold or warm weather doesn't matter.
Sometimes it goes away, but I've not yet found what triggers it.
I always use the Shell regular Diesel fuel, tried the Shell V Power but without much change.
One clue that I found is the following:
- I drive a lot of short distances, less than 10km.
- I had a Diesel particle filter warning for which I needed to enter the dealer. They regenerated the Diesel particle filter, and told me I got this warning because I drive to short distances.
The fact is now that after this garage regeneration the clattering was gone. Just to appear a few weeks later again.
You can sense when the engine is going into regen, the stationary rpm go to 800, the exhaust makes a more deep noise (I have the sport exhaust), the car blows a lot of heat, even the fan keeps running when the engine is off, and the car has a very specific smell. However, even when going to normal regen (not through the dealer), the clattering doesn't go away.
The second clue is from the previous post about the faulty timing belt tensioner. Mine has already been replaced ones 2 years ago.
And finally I once got the clattering at start-up and it went away after approx 45min drive. But I was never able to simulate that again.
If interested I have a video of the clattering.

Any update on this? Was it the tensioner?

EXHAUST GAS RECYCLE!.

Now this is a surprise. My car was with the Garage 3 days and in that time they diagnosed but didn't resolve.

Apparently my exhaust gas recycle path into the air inlet manifold is severely restricted by soot/filth....and on low throttle the air to fuel mixture is affected.
I didn't see the engine myself but have looked on You Tube and there are many descriptions of the issue and how it needs to be cleaned. They asked whether I had tries out Bio Diesel and how long my normal trips took. They are trying to understand why I started to have this issue only after a year.

They say it is a major work and they initially were waiting for approval from Porsche CH and they had to order a tool to carry out the clean.

This was 2 weeks ago and I am waiting for a date to carry out the work.

So I cannot yet say whether it solves the issue and for sure if it does I will want some assurance before my car finishes its warranty cover. If it is the EGR I am astounded it needs a clean so quickly and doesn't thrill me for the future. Lets see....
