Transmission oil leak

SD needed its AdBlue topping up so since I am off this week and was feeling lazy, I booked it in at Tewkesbury. It is 13 months old with 10k miles.

On arrival they brought it in for a "health check" - up on a ramp and a careful look round with the service manager. Tyres, brakes etc. all fine. Then up a bit higher and look underneath. All fine until he spotted some fresh oil. So they took it into the workshop, removed a cover and had a look. Apparently it appears to be coming from a seal at the back of the gearbox. So they have cleaned it off, sprayed it with chalk and want to take another look in 400-500 miles and see if they can tell exactly where it is coming from.

Apparently they are not always allowed to buy in spare gearbox parts - but wouldn't elaborate further on what it might mean to fix it. Maybe a new gasket - or a whole PDK? Who knows?

I have to say, I was impressed with them taking a very careful look round - there is no way I could have spotted this problem. Anway, I am going on a trip to visit relatives this weekend so have booked it back in next week - when I will obviously post an update!

Pretty sure there was someone from America who posted about this issue on this site...

You are right. There was - it was a GTS that had some sort of leak but I don't know what the outcome was. I think there was a you tube video link. May have been the same issue.

That was indeed the video. Looking again at it, it describes an engine oil leak with oil coming down and dripping of the AC unit. Mine is a transmission oil leak, possibly from the PDK - so a different issue. But thanks for re-posting

No problem, Ian. One interesting point, though, is that right at the beginning he talks about Porsche not owning up because it would mean a warranty repair. So I think Tewkesbury’s spiel about parts is bull and mirrors exactly his view. Either it’s a warranty fault or it’s not: there’s no such thing as a fault for which parts aren’t available. If it’s not warranty I’m sure they’d get the parts.

It’s bound to be a warranty fault on a 1 year old car. Whether they replace a faulty gasket or a whole gearbox is up to them. The guy in the video is just plain wrong - his view was that a dealer would hide this from you. Actually they found it (without me asking) and are proceeding to sort it out. As Paul mentioned in the past, warranty work will be paid for by Porsche and helps their business by bringing in work.

Maybe that’s a US dealers thing. Although I don’t know that I understand the not buying gearbox parts thing, I’ve no desire to stir it.

There could be a few reasons for the not buying gearbox parts, firstly they mightn't want to order parts before there sure what the fault is and whats required to repair it or it might be that the PDK is so complicated that is a return to factory or at least a central repair site.

A PDK ‘box under warranty is likely to be an exchange unit, rather than the dealership tinkering around with it.
