What a complete and utter load of bollocks!
I drive a few thousand miles a year in Southern Ireland and am yet to see anything other than 95 Ron at any fuel station. Whenever I’ve taken a car requiring 98, I just don’t gun it and fill up before boarding the ferry with 99, and then top up 1/2 tank or so with 95. In most cars that’s been good for 500 miles or more, which covers most of Southern Ireland, and back to the east coast ports.
You can always detour into the north to get 98 if you’re desperate.
I was under the impression that there was nothing above 95ron in the south and have never personally seen any. What some of the stations term as premium is 95ron. I just used this as unless your going to give it full beans you'll never notice the difference and the car will compensate by adjusting the timing to a less aggressive map.

I agree not a big issue with modern engine for short times. Glad to know I was not missing anything by not looking for 98+

Well now. Time to eat some Humble Pie.

I have seen Premium fuel in most garages in ROI so put two and two together and got 3.75. Turns out you're all right and I'm wrong, the premium is only 95 RON.

Pass me the spoon...

  We are all here to learn a little, surprised me but looks to be the case for Southern Ireland. Having been on their narrow and heavily policed roads I can see you are unlikely to need full performance much :( -- beautiful place to visit though :D

I have had many a portion of that particular pie on here before  and to tell the truth if I had been wrong wouldn't have been surprised. I have thought saw the lack of 98+ fuel in the south debated on the Irish Subaru forum so was fairly sure. Just google "flat four" and you'll find it or possibly some other odd sounding car forum ;)

I'm confused - if the 'Premium' fuel in Eire is 95 RON, what is their standard fuel ?

Standard would be 91ron, not even sure its availablke any more. Premium is just a marketing thing i would imagine.
Porsche would say, 91ron not a good idea, 95ron acceptable, 98+ron certainly gets the best out of the car and what idealy it was designed for.
