Hi all 1st past as a newbie to Macan Onwership having recently picked up a 2015 Macan S Diesel. Having owned a couple of Boxsters and a 911 I Love the car, I have however noticed a engine rattle when the car 1st starts last no more than a second and don't do it all the time, seems only when 1st started or having been left for a few hours, like I said don't do it all the time, as an "old" ex mechanic I would say it's like a hydraulic tapitt or chain tensioner not sure as it lasts for less then a second I need to worry or if it's common on a macan diesel, car did have a full Porsche service a couple of 2000 miles ok and no issues on the Heath check, thanks again any comments appreciated and hi to all the Forum group

Or the oil has drained away from the top end; if the noise goes away almost immediately and isn’t evident when the car has only been stood for a short while that would be my guess (and nothing to worry about)

What Paul says. It is very common in diesel engines for there to be a "clatter" at start up which goes away very quickly (I have had 2 diesel BMWs which exhibited exactly this)

Sounds like a normal operation of hydraulic lifters (modern tappets) making some noise until oil pressure restores the harmony in the cylinder head.
I wouldn’t worry, unless the noise stays on during idling — that is when you should have it replaced.

Hi I am also experiencing this issue on a 2016 Macan SD. From what I can find from the Audi 3.0 diesel world is the timing chain tensioner which requires the engine to be removed to get to a small part! They seem to say it’s while the oil pressure builds up. Lasts for 1-2 seconds isn’t a major issue but does sound rubbish when you first start the car. Also it’s not all the time, I’ve found if the engine has been driven more enthusiastically the day before it isn’t so common but it is if it has sat on a slope/hill. Would be good to hear from any others with this issue?

Very common in some John Deere engines too, can sound a bit horrible.

I wonder if it's exacerbated by the thin oils we use now?

Given the choice i always use the thickest oil on the list.
