You could claim that the goods were not of merchantable quality and go after the dealer in a small claims court using the consumer rights act of 2015 assuming no one agreed to pay.

Car would have to be less than 6 years old though. The Small Claims court is good because the legal costs cannot be claimed by the defendant from the plaintiff. If you lost you would just lose the Small Claims fee.

I am no lawyer so I may be totally wrong.
I think that as long as you bought new from a Porsche UK dealership you would be in a very strong position if your transfer box malfunctioned within 6 years. I would introduce the US extended warranty as evidence that Porsche accept that the transfer box was known to have been manufactured below normal Porsche standards.

I may have to have this conversation soon. I chose not to extend the warranty after 3 years and I have started to notice some drivetrain issues @ 38000 miles. Just planning to get the 40000 service booked in.

I just visited Porsche Silverstone to book an MOT for my SD as it is coming up to 5 years old. The technician mentioned two recalls that are due:

- Another DME update - I think this latest one was mentioned on the forum a few months back
- A transfer box fluid change - apparently this is a 'new' recall, hot off the press.

I did ask again about the US extended transfer box warranty mentioned above, and he intimated that this 'may' be coming to UK also. If so, then I can understand Porsche issuing a recall to change the transfer box fluid to reduce the risk of failure.

I'd appreciate it if other owners could confirm the new TB fluid change recall - I wonder if it's done on age or mileage? (mine's only done 24k miles). Mine's being done with the MOT in a couple of week's time. I also need to decide whether to extend the warranty by a further two years, as they will also take the opportunity to conduct the 111 point check (at a reduced price, not free unfortunately)

I then got chatting to Craig Porter (of this forum!) about 992 Carrera S lead times ... :?

Interesting, i think I read on the US forum some instances of a transfer box fluid change curing the problem. Some US owners have started to change the fluid as part of a regular maintenance regime. So many boxes have been replaced without a fluid change being tried first.

I had the Transfer Box fluid changed today, and it's listed now in my Service Manual under Service Campaigns as WLE9. I quizzed them about the 'campaign', mainly trying to find out if it was mileage or age driven. The response was that it is being applied to a certain sequence of VIN numbers on both Macan and Cayenne. Mine's a Sep 2015 SD and had a new transfer box in Feb 2018, so I don't know if the modification (or otherwise) state of my fitted transfer box was a factor.

The work was done by Porsche Silverstone whilst my car was having it's third MOT, latest DME update (WKL0) and Warranty Inspection - I've just taken out a further 2 years as was quite surprised that the 5-7 year extension is the same price as 3-5 years. I got the warranty inspection fee halved which was appreciated. Total cost incl MOT was £1602.85 (no breakdown cover).

My Porsche warranty documentation states "Extended warranty for transfer gear" - I assume this is related?

Presume that's the original 3 year warranty from new? Does it state the length of the extension?

Yes, it shows two parts to the new car warranty.

One is the full cover for three years. The other is the extended warranty for transfer gear, shows as 7 years from new.

As I bought it within the three year cover, they essentially used the pre-owned warranty to extend the new cover period - so I got longer than 2 years from when I bought it.

Hiya all,
My transfer box was replaced at 57k, before the expiry of the 3 year warranty; no cost to me.
Aside from the skipping rear wheels (which it has always done - *see below), the car presented a significant rumbling (almost like the brake discs had warped...) from the drive-train when hot. When I say hot, I mean after 2 to 3 hours of constant motorway speeds under load. It would abate if you eased off, but that simply isn't the point in a Porsche! It just doesn't seem to get hot enough until 2 hours or so.

It's just gone back in to the OPC for other work (2nd replacement of brake pads, and likely discs even though they have little more than 50% wear, now at 117k) and they have, as with others above, stated that there is a recall due relating to the fluid in the transfer box. It's a bit of a cheek to call it a "Recall", as they only tend to notify me when I turn up on their doorstep for other work. The important thing to note is that this is a recall on a replacement transfer box from 2018.

*The car has always "skipped" the rear wheels in slow corners, particularly right hand corners, and especially when cold. A few diagnoses and fluid changes have occurred throughout the last 5 years, but to no avail - it still skips. I've given up taking it back, as the OPC clearly don't know, or aren't being told what the cause is. If I'm honest, other 4 wheel drive SUV type vehicles have a tendancy to do the same, especially when the drive is switched to a more rigid off-road mode.
The other symptom that is rebuked and generally ignored is the graunching from the front drive train in the tighter corners when cold, which gets worse as the temperature goes down. This is very similar to when CV joints wear in front wheel drive systems. I notice it in right hand corners, as this is the first junction that the car has to be driven through after leaving home. It is getting more noticeable as the car ages.

My second service was done on my DS in June, nearly 35K, and three months short of its 4th Birthday. The local OPC, said to bring it back on its Birthday to have the break fluid changed. And also to bring it back at 40k, to have the transfer box fluid changed. This sounds like its for the TB box issues.
