In 86% of all accidents where the driver was using Waze, it was found that the app had been interacted with in a 10 seconds before the accident.

OK, I made that up, but then "using Google maps or apple maps while roaming, eats your roaming data allowance pretty quickly" sounds made up too.

OK, enough trolling Waze users for now, it's hard to concentrate on driving Wink

WAZE

I Googled it and got a link to the App where images of its display are shown.

Why on earth would I use a Navigation App that uses Icons that look like my 6 year old Grandsons colouring book?

QUESTION
How long would it be before my 500Mb of Mobile phone data was used if I Navigated via online maps?

I'd be interested to know how much data would be used by Google / Apple maps on a 2-3 hour journey.

Many people will be on contracts that limit data use so this could be a significant factor.

@Bazza - I did an approx 500 mile journey with CarPlay (Apple Maps) and it used about 9MB of data (attributed to Apple Maps in control panel).

With Google Maps, you can pre-cache your journey, so it would be zero.
Zero for most navigation apps actually.

(All above on iPhone - Android generally uses more data for its services, in my experience)

PCM is zero unless you use the traffic stuff (or Google Earth imagery, or do Google searches).

Well that's not bad, a lot less than I imagined.

Gordon.
I've used both google maps and waze whilst traveling in europe. Using Google maps I get the warning daily that I've exceeded my 50mb daily roaming allowance. With waze I don't.
Just my experience of driving 8-10 days a month in europe.
I'm usually in hire cars, so on board nav is not usually an option.

Coming back to waze, google maps, apple maps...etc traffic reports are spot on and in real time, speed limits and speedcam locations great features, re-routing is quick, ETA very accurate, and it's all that matters...and it's free. Anyone really concern about privacy and whatnot wouldn't put all their photos albums on, I don't know, flickr for example ;)
