I wonder if anyone has the answer to this frustration

The XS does not have a home button, you swipe to change app, after finishing with an iPhone function & wanting to select another I expected the PCM on screen home button to take me back to the car play main menu but that doesn’t happen. It sticks with the app in use & won’t allow another to be selected.
The only solution is to activate the phone (face recognition) & swipe the unwanted app away. Which defeats the object of car play, might as well have the phone in a holder.
I’ve assumed this is a an XS quirk & haven’t tried an old fashioned iPhone with home button
Anyone else got this issue or even better found a fix

Thanks but I now have an answer, sometimes the home button works, sometimes the back button has to be pressed
Not satisfactory, but I guess Apple didn’t keep everyone up to date when deleting the home button from the X range phones

I’m not exactly sure what you are describing but when you are using CarPlay there is a home button on the PCM screen. CarPlay is designed so you don’t need to touch the phone at all.

Indeed, but it doesn't work reliably

So let's just go through this again......you are using CarPlay and you want to change app. You press the home button (the white button) on the PCM screen and sometimes nothing happens? You talked about the 'back' button, I'm not sure why the back button is relevant to using CarPlay?

How does it compare to this?

The car depicted in the video you posted is not the same as my 2019 Macan S & has a different PCM, mine is below.
The back button seemingly works on all PCM modes including CarPlay
