Paul, confusion reigns (if you allow it), typical of a .gov.uk website to be less than clear, and in this case a;most contradictory. All these petty (EU) rules! Of course there is a difference between 'traveling in Europe' and 'within the European Union' , too subtle for clear guidance though. Like you, never had an issue in Europe, always had a GB sticker though.
- GREAT BRITAIN, Great Britain or GB
- UNITED KINGDOM, United Kingdom or UK
- CYMRU, Cymru, CYM or Cym
- ENGLAND, England, ENG, Eng
- SCOTLAND, Scotland, SCO or Sco
- WALES or Wales
You'll still need a GB sticker when travelling in Europe if you display one of these national flags and identifiers.
The flag must be above the identifier. You can't have the flag or
letters on the number plate margin, and neither can be more than 50
millimetres wide.
Euro symbol
If you display the Euro symbol and Great Britain (GB) national identifier on your number plate, then you won't need a separate GB sticker when travelling within the European Union.

Absolutely (designed to confuse!)
Displaying a country flag on the plates means you need a GB sticker, the GB letters surrounded by 12 / 18 / 27 (? ) Euro stars means no sticker..... (in the EU.....but Switzerland / Monaco.....who knows?)

If any doubt go to Halfords, buy a GB sticker, fix it on the rear window.
Job done.
Couldn't be easier.

As I'd said before, if there's room on the left hand edge of the plate these are a great compromise: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pair-GB-Euro-Vinyl-Sticker-For-Std-Car-Number-Plate-European-Travel-Identifier-/172279260657?hash=item281ca4e5f1:g:i8UAAOSwNuxXaDNg

I should of read this yesterday when I booked my tickets to LeMans!
I'm sure they'll change it though.
PS: Anybody else going to LeMans this year?
Not going to the race but are on the train at 9 on Friday morning. Should have some interesting company - I hope. Mrs D has already made noises about concentrating on the road 😳

I go into europe 1-2 times every month through the tunnel. I have been doing for 15 years plus. Never had a GB sticker, breathalysers, fire extinguisher, bulb kit, or anything else, other than a warning triangle, and high viz, which are always in my car.
Never been stopped, and never had a conversation with any European police, and this is travelling through France, holland, Belgium and Germany.
I have 4 coleageus who travel as regularly as me and none of them have ever had an issue either..
It's not that we refuse to carry these things, just that we go so regularly, often at short notice, that we forget.
