21" too big?

I'm happy new owner of the Macan 2015. My summer wheels are the one-piece alloy wheels in 5-spoke Sport Classic design. Painted Black (high-gloss), 21". They look damn good. But I'm scared of running in a pothole or something. The ride being bumpy.

I'm thinking they are too big? My main priority is comfort. I'm thinking of trading them for the 20" RS Spyder wheels. Would it make it difference in that case?

Currently I'm on aftermarket 19" for winter wheels and the ride is smooth and perfect. Feels really good. I want to maintain this feeling.

Thanks guys! :)

Does your car have PASM? (I assume it doesn't have air suspension).

One person's hard is another person's sporty, but I think the short answer is that 21" on PASM might just be OK for you, 21" without PASM almost certainly not.

Too my knowledge it should have air suspension.

But what if it doesn't, could a special type of tyres make the ride more comfort? My 21" summer wheels are currently on Michelin Latiude.

Best ride - 18’s
Best smooth road handling - 21’s (and arguably best looks but open to debate!)
Best compromise - probably 20’s but everyone “feels” different things!

Several have had Macans on 21” wheels with no PASM (including me briefly) and were perfectly happy with the ride. Someone on here (Mark?) may have had several Macans with this set up. :)

When I handed back my GTS with 21s and Pasm... I got a Macan S with 20s on Latitudes and pasm , the ride felt noticeably more uncomfortable than the GTS I drove over three hundred mile , could not understand why? So it’s probably about personal feel .

As an introduction to the Macan, I had a new, air suspension SD for a year with 19" Macan turbo wheels which I spec'd for reasons of ride comfort, road noise and kerbing.

Then, at the beginning of September 2018, I swapped it for a new, air suspension S with 21" 911 Turbo design wheels (a stock vehicle which the dealer had spec'd up).

To be honest, I can't notice any difference in the ride comfort or road noise between the two: the ride with air suspension is superb with either set of wheels. The 21" 911 Turbo wheels look totally awesome but I still do worry about kerbing them....

PonBon, when you are wanting the smoothest ride whatever the setup the greater the distance between alloy and tarmac the softer the ride. PASM and Air mask the fact that the metal is closer to the road surface and work hard to provide that smoothing when in comfort mode, although you do incur an increase in the road noise which is softened when running on smaller wheels.
The only issue is that a Macan on 18" wheels looks 💩 But then again you can't see them from the driving seat, but you do know they are there 😣 Best overall would be 20" which would be okay whatever the set up but ideally with PASM, even better on air, neither of which can be retrofitted.

My GTS on 20" is super comfortable even on Romanian roads. The test drive car was ok-ish even on 21".

A Macan should always ride on 21s. No ifs no buts. 21s or go home. In fact, the Hamann aftermarket tuned version goes to 22s. Sod kerbing and ride. It's all about the looks!
