Had my car in for alignment today and washed it afterwards. Noticed this after washing the car, not sure if it was already there or it was caused by the prongs on the alignment gauges - here’s a pic. Does this look old or new, is there any way to tell?

So hard to tell, looks fresh, but looking at the second picture there appears to be a small "chunk" out of the tyre under the wheel rash, maybe caused when rim was damaged? If so not likely to be alignment tool.

I haven’t curbed the wheels since owning the car and don’t remember seeing the damage cleaning the car previously. I did notice the small chunk missing but again it’s hard to say, Usually a pavement does more damage than what’s in the pic..

Got to take it up with the garage, was it carried out by Porsche? Going to be hard to prove unless they come clean, which I assume they would have done when you collected.

Alignment tools won’t inflict that sort of damage.

The pic looks like minor curb, or indeed pothole and the chunk out of the tyre in the same place would seem to confirm.

The garage wasn’t Porsche. Porsche use centre lock gauges i think. This garage used 3 prong gauges which sit exactly on the lip of the wheel where the damage is - hence why I thought it maybe the garage.

I’ve sent the garage pics so waiting to here back. The damage is small, less than 1” so there’s a possibility I may have missed it.. also the chunk is more of a slight cut which is tiny - pic makes it look bigger.

Does the damage actually look like it was done today? Is there even a way to determine this?

I would say the damage looks very recent as it’s so clean. If there a while you would have expected some dirt to have ingrained there.

Did the garage drive the car at all or was or left unattended with them.

I watched them align the car and it wasn’t driven at all. Any ideas where I should go from here? Not certain the garage caused it and don’t remember seeing it previously

Could a small piece of metal cause this kind of damage if placed on Gently? The gauge has a slight pointed edge but not sure it would cause this damage

Looking at the tyre nick you may have clipped a kerb edge corner or pothole or even a stone on the road. Easy to do without being aware. I know from personal experience. Did clip mine a couple of times exiting my own driveway before I realised where/who the offender was 😖 ! Don’t know if it would’ve been the alignment tooling?
