Can anyone explain the reason why the rear wheels are broader than the front wheels ?

It's part of Porsche's DNA and is based on racing chassis dynamics. Wider tyres at the rear give greater traction as well as better handling and cornering ability. It's one of the reasons the Macan is the best handling SUV on the planet.

Thank you.
The reason I,m asking is our macan had 18" original wheels which I think are too small for the car so I have fitted a set of Audi SQ5 20" wheels which are not staggered, wheels look great on the car but the offset is different. Front wheels are fine but the rears don,t fill the arches as good as original wheels. My question is would spacers be suitable or a broader tyre to fill the arch ?
On the plus side as the rear wheels don,t extend out into the arch as much it makes a huge difference to the amount of dirt sprayed on to the rear of the car.

A word of warning: there might be insurance/warranty implications resulting from fitting non-standard wheels.

Macan has wider rims and tyres on the rear for handling balance and safety. Insurance and if you have an official Porsche warranty you have just invalidated those too.

Not too worried about opc warranty, I put original wheels back on whenever it has to go to Porsche centre. Have informed insurance about change of wheels and paid a supplement.
Side on I think the car looks great but from the back it looks weird as the wheels don,t fill out the arches that's why I was asking about spacers ?

I think I would say if you want a car that drives like an Audi buy an Audi in the 1st place rather than pay for a Porsche and then turn it into an Audi and in addition risking insurance etc. it would also be a modification you would have to tell Ins Co about.
