I have some real stubborn tar on my alloys which I cannot shift using my Bilthamber cleaner.

Can anyone recommend a suitable product to get rid of the tar easily?

A soft cloth dampened in Methylated Spirit should move the tar

Autoglym tar remover. Works better in warm weather though!

I have lots of Tar damage to my bodywork and underside of exhausts, and wheel arches. Complained to our local authority and subsequently received a call from the road contractor.

A full detail has been authorised by the contractor.. worth complaining eh..

Interesting one - the WD40 - I'd never have considered that.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions, incredible, FranCK, that you got authority for a full detail. You must know how to exercise a complaint to the fullest :D

WD40 is basically white spirit with a bit of oil added.

Gyeon do a good tar remover. It's called Q2M and you can buy it in large 5 litre cartons which makes it really reasonable price wise. It's more a soak and gently remove than an instant result but is gentler and poses less risk to seals and finishes.

Some of the products out there are extremely aggressive and if you have had your wheels sealed, quite a few will strip all the protective coatings.

DuPont Prep-Sol Cleaning Solvent 3919S is also excellent, it's what body shops use for surface prep.

Oblitarate Tar remover by Auto Finesse seems to work well.
