Two million years ago while a student I had a part time job in a filling station in Edinburgh. Used to get talking to the tanker delivery guys. They told me that ALL petrol delivered around Southern Scotland came from the Grangemouth refinery and the only difference between fuels was the additives that each individual manufacturer put in.
Also I recall a documentary from a lock of years ago where a Bosch fuel injection specialist reckoned that the standard unleaded fuel was every bit as good as the 'high-spec' stuff, because the computers adjusted the timing and mapping dependent on the readings from the lambda probes before and after the cats.

So...
* Some fuels have better/useful additives.
* Even ancient fuel injection systems can make use of the higher octane ratings
All well known so far.
And
* It doesn't acknowledge the poor storage, delivery and quality control systems of cheaper (ie supermarket) stations - these are more often than not the cause of contamination.
You pays your money indeed.

I ran my 3.0 litre petrol Jag on cheap Supermarket fuel with no problem.
But
When I put in premium fuel then after a tankfull had been through the engine it always ran smoother and performed that bit better.

Not forgetting the alleged mpg gain - albeit almost impossible to gauge under normal driving conditions.

Not forgetting also that feeling you get that it's going to go better/faster with super vplus etc in. I often come out of petrol station after such a fill up thinking I'm Sebastian Vettel in a Ferrari - must see someone about that!

A better indication of real world consumption may be how many miles you do between fills if you fill when the fuel light comes on. My SD (75l tank) light comes on around 450 miles. Checking pcm against reality, fuel consumption reading around 10% too optimistic.my measurement tactic.. My Turbo ran to Barmouth and back from home and a little fun around the Welsh hills .. fill tank at 30 miles remaining.. then 0 the mileage 350 miles later back to 30 miles remaining so 24.3mpg not bad me thinks
