Re 911s, I'd refer to the 996, 997, 991 and 992 as four generations. I think some of us above were referring to pre-facelift and facelift 991 as 991.1 and 991.2. Regardless - both are the same generation. Just terminology, we all know what each other mean!

In Autocar's review of the facelift Macan S:
I can see plenty of Macan owners driving this car and electing to keep their deposits dry for a GTS or a Turbo. By current fast 4x4 standards for straight-line shove, the Macan S just isn’t quite cutting it.

Depends what you want it for - it doesn’t need to be massively fast

Had no issues getting indicated 160 out of the Mrs’ in Germany this week

Mate has just this second sent me spec of one he ordered his Mrs today - well in to turbo money I would think but again as for his Mrs she doesn’t need any more speed.

Wow! £85,491 for a Macan S!!

Base price £49,300. Options £36,191. That’s 73.4% of the base price!

Is your mate serious?! ;)

Among other things he was annoyed he didn’t get a Gen 2 991 RS allocation so ‘we’ went off and bought huracan Performante to stick two fingers up at Porsche

However he still wanted the 911 so bought one of those at overs too!

Both get used properly on track too

There are some other nice cars and bikes in the stable too

Some very good points raised in this thread and has made me look closer into each option.

I visited my local OPC yesterday to go through the spec of the facelift Macan S. The SE is pushing hard for me to include the air suspension - would anyone recommend this?

I’ve also booked in time next week to test drive one and also the GTS so hopefully next week my decision will be made.

The same guy who wrote that also said "in the Macan S and you’ll find an engine that’s sharp and responsive, as well as being strong enough under a wide-open throttle to make you wonder if a more powerful Macan is really necessary"

In reality one could argue both are true and it's why a thread like this gets so many replies. "straight-line" shove may be a box many want a big fat tick in but after 2 months of Macan ownership so many other boxes are brilliantly ticked that I'm more than happy with the package. I think modern engines are a victim of their own success, the facelift Macan torque curve is heading towards a square wave, it plateaus from 1,360 rpm (!!!) staying there until 4,800 rpm, that equates to great real world performance, but perhaps lacks the delivery many yearn for.

Will I upgrade to a Turbo? Unlikely unless Porsche produce something really special. Will I upgrade to a GTS when or if it arrives? We'll see but the GTS is likely to be a extremely well thought out car that Porsche needs to have success with to stretch the model cycle as far as possible. But I'm glad I got a deal on a set of winter wheels & tires as the most likely option is the Macan S will be a long termer for me.
