Hi all,

wondering if anyone has experienced a noise when pulling off that sounds like a hydraulic lifter failing or loose timing chain. It’s a mechanical clicking noise that does not always occur but is noticeable when it makes it.

2017 GTS, 52,000 miles, full service history, has recently had new oil, filter, air filters. Oil and filters changed every 6,000 miles.

Old oil and filter checked with a magnet and fine strainer, clear and no metallic particles.

Engine uses no oil at all between services.

No loss in performance, timing chain appears tight when checked through the oil filler.

Does not make any noise when stationary and revved.

Exhaust brackets checked and appear fine.

Transfer box good and recently serviced.

High pressure fuel pumps checked when stationery\revved no unexpected noises.

Fuel injectors sound normal.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

Possibly pinking. Get the timing checked. Or test by adding an octane booster. If the booster stops it it's the timing or you're using 95 when it must be 98

Surely a 2017 Macan doesn’t actually need 98? I’d have thought 95 might not be as efficient but shouldn’t cause pinking.

No it shouldn't but if there is a fault with the auto retard function of the ignition then it will be a reason. I am assuming that a 2017 GTS was tuned to use 98 and putting 95 in normally just retards it slightly. If putting an octane additive cures it then it will be pinking and the reason the engine management system isn't working needs investigation.

This is just a suggestion of what may be causing the symptoms. A metallic knocking sound on initial load of an engine is precisely what pinking is. Most drivers under the age of 40 have never heard it.

Could it be E10 fuel that's causing the pinking?
Have you left it standing for a longish time? E10 is quite hydroscopic. I wonder if there is moisture getting into the fuel system.

This doesn't sound like pinking to me and I think it's highly unlikely anyway. And if there was an ECU fault the engine management fault warning light would be up.

Best course of action is to take this to an OPC or good indie and demonstrate the fault to an experienced technician. If you have an extended warranty and it's an engine fault or other serious issue it'll be covered at the OPC, if not then indie will be cheapest option. If it's something minor rattling, indie probably best again.

Thanks all for the feedback. After much work and investigation it appears to only make the noise with slight right steering.

So looking like drive shaft related. So today’s job is to strip it down and see what I can find.

I will advise what I find.
