On 24 April 2023, 9 weeks after taking delivery of my new S this appeared:

20230420_125245.jpg

What's visible is really the "stretchmark" in the PPF. This was after the car had been parked quite "out of the way" whilst I played golf. My immediate reaction was "who's done this?!" However, the car parked next to mine was a small hatchback and there's no way any part of that could made contact with my B pillar, furthermore, examination of the golf club car park CCTV revealed no movement of any other vehicle which could have made such contact either.  So I then started looking for other causes...

Vandalism?  Had this been done with say, a hammer, there'd be noticeable damage to the PPF (self healing, maybe, but not to THAT extent) and why would anybody when there's a lovely glass window just waiting to shatter 20mm away?  However, the PPF had no damage, other than the stretching across the crack, which grew in length since April as well as another split having appeared although it's only apparent in this image where it distorts the reflection of the first floor:

Further investigation turned up these references:

.... and in the USA:

.... even Germany, although the translation leaves something to be desired!

After advising my OPC by email I visited them on 14 June. A service advisor took a look and was adamant that it was obviously impact damage and wouldn't be covered by the warranty, quite officiously, I thought! I kept my cool to avoid a slanging match and just ran through my thought processes and the info above. I departed and promised to forward him the details so he could take it up with the warranty folk, he seemed a bit more cooperative now. I sent the stuff over before the end of day and warned I wasn't going to be easily fobbed off and that they have my on-going custom to consider.

The SA called me last Friday, 16 June and, as we'd all expect, the Porsche "warranty folk" had declined to entertain any claim (they probably have a bonus riding on doing so) however, my now friendly SA had been in contact with Porsche UK (who, it seems, were aware of previous such occurences) about a Goodwill resolution and was just awaiting a "code" before booking the car in to be fixed. Result! So, in short, I'll be there first thing this Thursday, 22 June 2023. A visit to Invisifilm in Middlewich on my way home will get the PPF replaced and all will be well 🤞🤞🤞

Hi Neil, sorry to hear about your issue. I was just wondering if this could in someway have been caused by the application of the PPF?

Good result but pretty bad service overall. Sign of these times when Porsche start to decline warranty claims. :(

I can't see how and there's no reference to PPF in any of the other cases. The suggestion from Porsche was that it was due to the "user", me, gripping the B pillar, with window open to open/close the door. Only issue with that is: 1) I never have; 2) It never happened to my previous Macan in 3.5 years! :D

No, wouldn't touch it with the proverbial barge pole, its the door handles that seems to affect...

Arrived at Stockport OPC at 08:00 today for a first in the queue while you wait appointment and asked them to adjust a couple of the washer jets too. Went next door for breakfast (Tesco, I know how to live!) before returning to read the paper, drink the coffee and look at the three 911 cabriolets in the showroom, surprised to note they have much the same power and 0-60 times as my Macan, if a 20 mph greater top speed, then at 10:30ish I rattled the SA's cage. Low and behold it was ready, no idea how long that had been the case  so I departed with a plea for a good review ringing in my ears (2.5 hours to do a 5 min job? 🤔). Dropped in unannounced to Invisifilm and had the PPF replaced in 10 minutes FOC, what a difference! Then a delightful Cheshire drive home, all sorted.

Did they offer any further explanation as to what may have caused it?

No and if they had I doubt it would have been credible.
