Cracked windscreen

Seems to have happened overnight. I am certain this is not malicious damage or impact by a stone when driving. I am unsure whether to use Autoglass (recommended by our insurance co.) or to use a main dealer (Edinburgh). Does anyone have any experience of using Autoglass versus main dealer? Thanks for reading this.

You might find that if you want to use an main dealer instead of your insurance companies recommended supplier (Autoglass) that you will have to pay a premium over and above your agreed windscreen excess than if you stick with Autoglass. Not had to have a windscreen replaced so can't help on how they compare to using your local OPC

I’d be very surprised if the OPC’s actually change windscreens themselves

Autoglass replaced my 992's screen 12 months ago with an OEM one. No problems

Per above, OPCs do seem to outsource eg my 718 is at an OPC now to get a new screen which they've arranged to have done by National Windscreens

Had this exact issue over Christmas. A crack started growing from the drivers side lower corner of the screen, and I could literally watch it slowly spreading until it stopped in the centre. No obvious damage where the crack began, very odd.

So I rang my insurer and was given 2 options: 1) Replace with a "generic" screen for a £50 excess at Autoglass; 2) Pay full whack (£1k ish) for an OEM "Porsche" screen, also fitted at Autoglass.

I checked with Porsche Brooklands and the non-OEM screen would not affect my warranty, so i went with that, on the basis that if I needed to replace it for an OEM one later, at most I was £50 and a bit of my time down. As it turns out, when I collected the car, they'd used OEM "Porsche" glass anyway, exactly as factory.

As if by magic this thread appeared!!

Last week driving down south large stone hurtled thru the air from lane 2 of the A1M and chipped my screen, to be honest thought it was going to come right thru the glass given the "Bang".

I booked a screen repair via my insurer at home this morning (First appointment Autoglass had), sadly they failed to repair after two attempts and the glass was splitting further, so full screen now required. Autoglass guy said no gurantee to be a Genuine Porsche screen and would be compatible one. I then asked about impact on warranties of the cameras etc going forward and said they only guarantee the glass fitting.

Spoke with my insurer at lunchtime and put it to them fine use Autoglass at their official repairer and they agreed car under two years old so will insist on original Porsche spare screen, but they are calling me back re any future warranty issue on the camear callibrations etc etc.

I have put a call in to local OPC so they are getting costs and when they can do it, but said they call in a glass specialist to fit screen but they do the calibrations.

Anyway I made the calls asked the questions and will see what Admiral my insurer comes back with, my excess is £115 for the full screen repair.

Nightmare to be honest, with just the hassle, heated screen as well.

Will keep you all posted how this works out.

I had my screen replaced by Autoglass and they did the “calibrations” (whatever that means) and zero issues.
Don’t even know if it’s an OEM screen or not but I can see out of it and the wipers and cameras worked so all good.
When I sold back to the OPC, it was never mentioned or checked

Thanks for all replies. The crack on my windscreen started at passenger side, lower left corner and spread across and going higher. Almost 3 feet long now. Not sure if it is increasing. I think I will just stick with Autoglass as like others here, it will be easier on my pocket.

think you will find porsche will sub it out to a windscreen company, they did try to fit an after market one but i insisted as it might effect the warrenty and sensers in the screen, it worked
